Guest Post: There Are Those Days by Brigid Weinzinger

To celebrate the release of my new book, Fall In Love With Life, I inviteda few friends to share their experiences and tips for falling in love with life. Today, I welcome Brigid of denktier.com Here’s Brigid’s take on loving life:

There are those days.

When life sucks.

When I wake up. Grumpy.

And grumpy I stay.

Well, to be honest, more often than not it is hard work to stay grumpy.

You have to know one thing: I share my place with these experts on joyful living.

They just love life.

They are nice enough not to tell me in so many words, but they just can’t help showing it – every single moment of their waking state. They even sleep loving life, I swear!

No, I do not live in an enlightened buddhist community.( Or maybe I do but wouldn’t know). The one thing those all time life-loving creatures share is four legs and a furry skin.

We are talking pets here, dogs and cats and horses to be exact. And if there ever was somebody to make me understand the meaning of loving life it is them.

There are three routes to happiness that you can travel with your pet.

1) Sensual soothing stroking of a cuddly little thing just makes you happy.

You can’t help it!

There is lots of scientific evidence by now how being with a pet and touching it reduces stress and heart rate and blood pressures (whether it does so for the animal involved will however strongly depend on how you do it).

So go ahead and get your dosage of the bonding happy-hormone oxytocin by cuddling up with your cat or dog.

2) Be. Here. Now.

(Sorry, Ram Dass, I know it’s your book, but the animal world has been living this like forever!)

There are many ways to experience living in the moment, being really present. But none as simple and as fast as being with your pet and sharing their time-space.

Try it!

Sit with your pet (or one of a friend or just with a horse across a fence) and just breathe with them and be with them and experience what they are experiencing.

You’ll feel the joy creeping up inside you. Promise!

3) Enjoy! Be In Joy!

Ever notice how joyful animals are?

They have this enchanted ability to absolutely enjoy every single thing there is to enjoy.

A ray of sunlight on the floor and your cat all stretched out and bathing in it.

And your dog – oh my, the dogs! Happy that the sun rises, happy that their human rises, uberhappy that food is coming, happy to go out, happy to come home, happy to dig a hole, happy to play with you or their doggie friend or a stick. Just happy all day long!

You get the drift? I mean they could just as well be fed up with food bowl empty again, having to leave the park, not getting out when they want and a myriad of other things.

But NO. They choose to be happy as often as possible, which is like every moment of the day. So can you! Choose to be happy! YES! You just choose.
