How Can I Fall In Love With Life When Life is Ugly

I’m starting to find my equilibrium again. The world at large has rocked me over the past week.

There’s been horror and rage and heartbreak and spine stiffening and decisions.

I’ve decided to deliberately take an anti-racist stance. I have always been anti-racist, but I’ve been part of what I believe is the silent majority.

Like, this doesn’t need saying, right?

No longer. It needs saying. A lot. I’m no longer a silent ally, I’m a vocal ally.

The whole issue got me thinking about loving life while the world burns.

How can we love life when life is ugly?

How can we come face to face with painful truths and still love life?

The answer is duality. 2 parts of a truth can exist.

Like you can grieve the loss AND treasure the memory.

You can feel fury at injustice AND feel the love for your fellow human (which inspires said fury).

You can feel the despair at the breaking down of old structures AND the hope of building better.

Life is rarely wall to wall sunshine and fluffy bunnies.

Shit happens. To us personally, to our friends, to our communities, to our countries, to our world.

And shit will keep happening.

But growth will also happen.

And that will keep happening too.

So when you feel the world is ugly and you can’t love life…

Look for the love.

Look for the beauty.

Look for the humanity.

Even in the midst of a lot of ugliness, there has been beauty too – there has been compassion and courage and love and genuine human connection.

Look for the stories and allow yourself to be moved and humbled and hurt and ashamed and proud and inspired.

Feel it all.

And (if you can) love it all.

Love the grief that breaks your heart – it shows great love.

Love the anger – it shows great passion.

Love the shame – it shows compassion.

Love the ignorance – it allows for learning.

Love your life even though it’s not perfect.

If we wait for the world to be a perfect place before we love life, we’ll be waiting a long time!

Love your life even though life’s tough.

Love your life anyway.

This might feel out of reach to you today.

That’s OK too.

Honour your truth.

And do one thing today that takes a step toward loving life.

Do something you enjoy, switch off, hear your heart’s whispers, take excellent care of you, be nice to the mirror, refuel yourself, speak your truth.

See the fear and the anger and the hate AND see the love and the beauty and the heart.

See and love all that is beautiful, commit to being part of the solution to what is ugly.

Life can sometimes feel painful, we have low times, dark nights of the soul.

But the sun will come out again, better days will come.

And we will find a way to love life even though it’s imperfect.
