Here’s a little excerpt from the book I’m working on right now…this is for Janet! <3
One of the things that makes my soul sing is to write. I love to write. I love to share the millions of crazy thoughts that fly through my weirdo brain on a daily basis. But for years, I clipped the wings of this particular eagle. I would only let myself do this activity that made my soul sing so much if it was work-related!
Hmm. Not so soul-singy. A bit more soul-muttery, frankly. And here’s what I don’t get: if it makes your soul sing, why wouldn’t you do it? I never had an adequate answer to that question, and I suspect you don’t either. But there’s all this stupid conditioning about being an adult and responsibility and having good reasons to do things.
Here’s a reason: it makes my soul sing!
Do I need another reason? Do I need to make money from it? Do I need it to be ‘good’? Do I need it to have a purpose? Or could the fact that it makes my soul sing be enough? Could I just do it because I love to do it? Seriously, does it make any sense to you to put off doing things that make your soul sing? (If it does, please tell me, because I really don’t get it…and I do it!)
Anyway, one minor obstacle to doing what makes our soul sing is that we don’t know what makes our soul sing. We get put into a box and we forget that we even have a soul, never mind that it has a song. Well, hopefully you know now that you do have a soul…and that it sings.
Now, you get to enjoy the delicious exploration phase to find out. You probably have a few ideas already – go and try them out. Some of the other things that make my soul sing are: sunsets, sun-rises (it’s me not being a morning person that gets in the way of this one!), music, dancing, singing, drawing daft and random stick drawings (badly!), reading, theatre, live music and cinema, learning, rainbows, sunshine, walking in nature.
Any of them appeal? Try them. Notice if your soul sings or shrugs. Find the things that your soul adores…and do them. Not for a living, not to achieve a goal, but just because your soul sings when you dance around your room singing into a hairbrush…
Love
