So, you have this magnificent vision for your life – you know what you want…or at least you know that you want more than you have now – there’s a pull to have a more amazing life…and now it’s time to take some action!
The dreaming bit is fun and necessary and gives energy to your desire and lights the blue touch paper…but all that is for nothing if you do nothing. You need to ACT. Take action. If you don’t know what to do, find out what to do. If you haven’t done yet, brainstorm all the actions you could take to make your vision a reality…then take those steps.
One by one, inexorably, step by step you will reach the top of the mountain…but you need to take those steps, take the actions. I know you’re busy and stressed and you have a full life already, who doesn’t…but if you wait to take action until you’re less busy and stressed; or until the stars are in alignment; or until you know every single action you will ever need to take; or until you feel totally confident…you’re wasting time.
Time that you could be getting closer to your vision. I know what it’s like. I’ve done it. I’ve waited for ‘the right time’; for a quieter life (that never happened); for inspiration to strike; for myself to feel totally confident in my vision…and days, weeks, months, and in some cases years went by without me taking action on my biggest dreams and most cherished visions. We don’t want that. We don’t want another year to pass, we want to start making progress right now.
We want to start living the life we want to live as soon as possible, and waiting and dreaming won’t be enough. Dreaming of the top of the mountain won’t take you there…you have to take the steps (or walk to the cable car, or get a helicopter to drop you off!) So what action do you need to take to make your vision for your life come to pass?
As you can see from the picture I chose this week, I’m not talking about hard, boring, painful, push push action…I’m talking dancing action, fun action, good action, movement that is easy and enjoyable and gets your momentum going. Because that’s really all you need to do, is get the ball rolling – once you have, it will generally keep rolling…and if it doesn’t, you just get it rolling again by taking a bit more action.
The idea of taking action can sometimes become a big scary obstacle in our path…because we don’t break it down into manageable parts. We don’t think next steps and baby steps. Instead we give ourselves enormous projects to do that just put us off because they’re ‘too big’ and ‘too vague’. To get yourself moving, you need specific, easy, baby steps and next steps. Otherwise you’re going to overwhelm yourself and stress yourself out…and our lives are already busy and stressful, who needs the extra hassle?
Your vision doesn’t want to become a burden to you, it wants to be something you are excited and happy to be working on. Not something you use to beat yourself up for being lazy, procrastinating or neglectful of your dreams. You are none of these things. You just haven’t given yourself the best chance to get up the mountain by defining the next step and breaking it down into baby steps.
And a baby step is not something that would take a team of 8 people 3 weeks to complete! It is something that one person (you…but also feel free to delegate!) can do in 10-15 minutes. A proper baby step is small, easy and can be done fairly quickly. Make a call; google something; write one blog/page/paragraph; write a draft letter; organise a meeting; brainstorm an aspect of your vision; investigate one option.
Too often we get stuck because we’ve bitten off more than we can chew…and all we need to do to get unstuck is to work out the next step we need to take and break it down into a baby step. Once that’s done, what’s next? Break it down. Do that. What’s next? Break it down. Do that. It’s simple…and it really can be that simple. Ok, sometimes you have some work to do to figure out what the hell to do, but we live in the information age – the information you need is very likely at your fingertips.
If your vision ever feels stuck, try this first: Identify the next step. Break it down into a baby step and do it. Repeat.
Honestly, 9 times out of 10, that’s all you’ll need to do!
So, you want your vision for your life to come to pass? Move your ass? (and get your dancing shoes on, baby, cos this is going to be fun!)
