As long time readers of this blog may remember, one of my all time favourite quotes is from American Writer Kurt Vonnegut “We are here on Earth to fart around. Don’t let anybody tell you any different.” When I was contemplating what the August Daily practice should be, I was thinking about my usual lack of work ethic in August, and this quote came back to me. You see, in August, the kids are off school, uni students are off, teachers are off, many people are going on their summer holidays and it seems that I pick up on the ‘holiday energy’ and go into a bit of a go-slow mode!
According to the Inner Expansion blog, the spiritual year ends in August which would explain why I always get so sluggish in August – I’m tapping into the waning energy, not just being lazy! In the natural world, August is a time for plants to bask in their green or flowery finery, and for the crops to grow some more before the harvest in Autumn – no big effort required, just basking in sunshine (hopefully). (in the northern hemisphere at least). So August is a hazy, lazy, indolent, reflective, holiday time…the perfect month to perfect the art of Farting Around.
Of all the things I share with my clients, the one they have the most trouble with is ‘joy’. Living joyfully. Enjoying life. Farting around, if you will! Farting around is defined in the Free Dictionary as ‘fooling around’, ‘frittering time away’. It’s one of my favourite pastimes. I love to moodle, to potter, to play, to mess around, to just do what I feel like doing at any particular time.
Most of the time, most of us don’t have time to fart around, we’re far too busy being sensible, serious, working, responsible, rational, earnest human beings, working and making our way in the world. There’s work to be done, and chores to be done, and self-improvement to be done, and duties to be taken care of, and responsibilities to shoulder. Well, for this month, I want you to put down those weighty issues and get into some constructive farting around! I am not suggesting that you abandon your duties and responsibilities, or jack in your job, but that you pay some attention to enjoying August, and kick up your heels a bit!
As I always do in these Daily Practices, on my Facebook and Twitter pages, I will share a daily prompt to help remind you and inspire you to Fart Around, so make sure you’re following me to keep up. And as always, I would love to hear your thoughts on this practice – please leave me a comment below or contact me through the Facebook or Twitter pages. I’d love to hear if you’re joining me in this monthly practice, and if you have any favourite ways to encourage farting around!
Love

PS To facilitate Farting Around time, the Dreams to Reality podcast and the Ask Donna videos are on hiatus for August. They’ll be back (probably) in September.

Really interesting about the spiritual year ending in August. It’s been a time of huge transformation for me for the last several years. Farting around sounds like a lovely practice! Lots of fun!

Oooooo yes I definitely feel like farting around in August, and the rest of the year too. So true, we need more permission to fart!
Lol – I’m not sure there is such a thing as too much silliness Sibylle?! x
YES!! It’s time to take some time, and it’s also time to allow for silliness ๐ I have to admit I do a lot of this these days, maybe almost too much but that’s definitely better than too little… -I love the expression “Farting Around”, it describes it so well!
Much love and blessings,
Sibylle
