How To Wake Up Loving Life

Let me be clear – I am NOT a morning person – I am not naturally chipper and chirpy before I’ve been awake for an hour or so, but I do know that how you’re woken up makes a big difference to how you feel. One of my biggest rants in life is about the utter moron who thought waking up to an incessant “beep! Beep! Beep!” was a good idea! Seriously, who the fuck wants to wake up like that?

For years, I would be jarred out of sleep by this awful, offensive noise, already in a foul mood because A I’d been woken up, and B I’d been woken up in such a rude and objectionable way. Bah! Cue the morning grumps.

As I say, I’m no morning person at the best of times BUT wake me up with something that doesn’t set my teeth on edge and annoy me before I’m even fully awake and I’m a much nicer person to be around. My preference is to wake up naturally – when I’ve had enough sleep, or my bladder needs emptying, I’ll wake up all by myself.

Sometimes that’s not practical as I have to be up at the crack of a sparrow’s fart. On those days, I have a CD alarm (the greatest invention of the last 300 years!) with music I like. Not some fecking annoying DJ who’s far too cheerful at asleep o’clock in the morning (there’s nothing worse to a non-morning person than a chirpy morning person).

Seriously, morning people, rein in your chirpiness in the morning around us non-morning people – you may not understand us, but that will not stop us hitting you with a chair! Ahem, anyway, where was I?

Ah yes, music I like. Here’s how I make up my CD (or playlist if you’re very modern and hip and cool):

The first song is a nice, mellow, lovely song to gently coax me out of sleep…and soothing enough that I can get an extra 3-4 minutes kip if necessary. From there, the music gets progressively more upbeat, until we get to the likes of Beyonce, the Spice Girls (hey, we’ve established before, I am not cool!) and the Black Eyed Peas (who can stay in bed when Crazy In Love/Spice Up Your Life/Pump It comes on the stereo?).

Alakazam, I’m up! And I’m relatively cheerful and loving life. I’m still a grouch – like I say, I’m not a morning person, but I am not livid at having been disagreeably awakened.

As you can see, I’m pretty passionate about this – what I’m saying is wake up in the best way for you – in a way that allows you to wake up feeling good, not in a way that starts the day off with a racing heart and violently smashing your alarm clock to pieces on your mind.

Let me know in the comments below how you wake up loving life.
