What to do for self-care

What to do for self-care

So a couple of weeks ago I talked about self-care – how to check on how cared for you feel and why it’s important…but what do you do for your self-care? Because it’s more than just massages (which are awesome) and eating the right food (which is good for you). It’s everything that makes you feel cared for. And sometimes what we do to keep healthy isn’t great from a self-care point of view (for example deprivation diets and punishing exercise regimes).

Self-care is being kind to yourself. Self-care is honouring how you feel. Self-care is giving yourself what you need. Self-care will be different every day. Some days what you need is a nap, a rest, a break. Some days what you need is to move or socialise or do something fun.

Some days what you need is a big hug or a massage or to be with people you love. Some days what you need is peace, meditation, time in nature. Some days what you need is to get out of the house, go somewhere, see someone. Some days what you need is to curl up on the sofa with a good book.

So I can’t tell you what, specifically, to do for great self-care, because not only does it change every day, it is very personal to you. I am a bookworm introvert, so much of my self-care is quiet, peaceful and doesn’t involve other people – reading, writing, walks in nature, playing with my dog, music, dancing, naps, meditation.

if you’re an extrovert or you don’t do books or the great outdoors, this list will be like kryptonite for you. So you need to find the self-care activities that make you feel good, that are wonderful for you.

So I have 3 exercises for you this week to find some cool ways to take care of you:

1. Make a list of what you do for self-care – this could be stuff you do now or stuff you would like to do (making it easy is good self-care, so just think of a few things…and if you can’t think of much, exercises 2 and 3 will really help!!)

2. Google ‘self-care ideas’ and find 5 things you’d like to do for your self-care. (Bonus exercise: do them over the next week.)

3. Breathe into your heart for 3 breaths. Ask your heart what you need today to feel cared for. (Bonus exercise: do it.) (Big Bonus exercise: Do this exercise daily.)

You are the expert on you. You know what you need. You know what will make you feel good and cared for. You simply need to take the time to ask the questions…and then act on the answers!

PS if you’d like to work on taking care of yourself and loving your life, come join my facebook group where we have a different daily practice every month – like self-care, self-love, joy, movement, laughter.
