Dreams to Reality: Your Dream Team

Achieving a Big Dream requires many things – ambition, effort, energy, courage, tenacity, determination, big action, a sense of humour amongst them. But one of the most important things your Big Dream needs is a ‘Dream Team’. Your Dream Team consists of people who support, honour, encourage, cheerlead, and in any way they can, help you move your big dream forward. And because this Team is so important to your big dream, I believe you need to pay attention to who is in your Dream Team.

Rather than take the default of your current circle of friends – whether they are any good at being part of a Dream Team or not – you can decide what you want in a dream team, and then go and find those people. Our friends can sometimes be Dream Squashers – without meaning to be, they might be ‘practical’ or ‘realistic’ or ‘protective’…when you need people behind you and your big Dream who believe you can fly!

You may want people with similar big dreams, entrepreneurs, adventurers, creatives; people who are unfailingly positive and optimistic; who are brutally honest (although if you go for this, make sure they are also compassionate and believe in you…otherwise they become Dream Squashers); who push you to take action; who can pull you up when you fall down; who inspire you; who believe in you; who can coach or mentor you; who can be a sounding-board; who encourage you; who have a great sense of humour who remind you not to take yourself so seriously!

Don’t be too daunted by all this – the chance are you already know a few people who could fulfil some or all of these roles. And some of them will fulfil multiple roles. For example, one of my friends is a coach, a sounding-board, she inspires me, she believes in me, she has similar big dreams, she is unfailingly positive and optimistic, she is honest (not brutally so!), she is encouraging, she is fun. In fact, she’s bloody brilliant! I am eternally grateful that she is part of my Dream Team!

My ‘core’ Dream Team is small, and consists of just 2 or 3 people – these are the people I will share brand new ‘baby’ ideas with and they will help me take them all the way to completion and beyond (said in Buzz Lightyear voice!). And then I have my wider Dream Team who I will turn to at different points in the process – but all of whom are absolutely vital. Any successful person will tell you that it took a whole host of people to get them where they are. Just think of the Oscar acceptance speeches – all the people they have to thank – friends, family, colleagues, mentors, inspirations.

You don’t have to do it all alone – and if you try, you are less likely to succeed. And you will have less fun! I tried for years to do it alone – I am relentlessly independant and self-sufficient…but then I realised I can’t do it alone. And it was not fair to either me OR my big dream OR the millions (eek!) of people my Big Dream wants me to impact. So I found my Dream Team. And without them, I would be utterly lost. You guys know who you are. You ROCK! Thank you.
