So, did you listen to your soul this month? Did you hear the whispers of your soul? Did you take time to pay attention and hear your soul’s wisdom? What did you discover?
And if you didn’t take the time, what got in the way? What stopped you from hearing your soul? The lessons and insights from NOT doing something can be just as profound and enlightening as those you learn from doing something. Take a couple of minutes now to reflect on your experience of hearing your soul’s wisdom (or not!)
For me, I already check in with my soul daily, but it was often at the end of the day, and the last thing I wrote in my morning pages. This had led to a bit of jaded-ness in hearing my soul, and treating the sacred practice of checking in with my soul as an afterthought. In May, I promoted hearing my soul to earlier in the Morning Pages process and often earlier in the day. This led to me hearing with fresher ears.
Here are my top 5 learnings from this month’s practice:
1. Tiredness interferes with the soul signal – the less tired I am, the better I can hear my soul speak.
2. Although it is a great thing to get into a routine of checking in with your soul (ie as part of my morning pages practice), it can become prescriptive, and needs freshening up sometimes.
3. The ‘lighter’ I am, the better the signal – if I’m taking life very seriously, it’s harder to hear my soul because she is so light and free and joyful.
4. My soul ALWAYS has the right wisdom for me in that moment – whether it’s inspiration I need, encouragement, gentleness, a kick in the pants…she always knows what I need. I knew this before, but it’s one of the most important things to know.
5. Taking the time to pay attention to my soul’s yearnings and whispers is far more important than any ‘busy-work’ I might be putting ahead of my soul.
And yes, I will be continuing this practice of listening to my soul every day, and to help me do so, I’ve signed up for an e-course on Soulful Journalling with the lovely Jodi Chapman. Will you keep listening to your soul? And how will you keep up the practice?
Here’s the best of the daily reminders from Facebook and Twitter for you, just in case you missed them…or you want to bookmark them to come back to later.
-
- How do you hear your soul best? For me, writing, meditation, being in nature are where I find it easiest to hear my soul’s voice.
- What does your soul want you to know today?
- Get outside in nature and let the beauty and silence stimulate your soul’s voice.
- Breathe deeply, let your thoughts go quiet, ask your soul what she has to share today.
- What stops you hearing the voice of your soul? Constant input, impatience, anxiety, worry and a racing mind will make it difficult to hear your soul. Take some time to quiet down, switch off and relax – your soul is always speaking to you and you will hear it.
- Tuning into your soul is like tuning into a radio station – you have to get the right frequency to hear it.
- Take a little time today to have a conversation with your soul – write your questions, pause, listen and write the answers (you’ll know the voice of your soul, it’s loving and gentle, not critical and harsh – the voice that’s heckling you for not doing it right, that’s not your soul!)
- Let your soul talk to you through nature – watch the wind in the trees, watch the sun set, smell the flowers, look at the stars.
- Practice makes perfect – the more you listen to your soul, the more you’ll hear it.
- Notice when you find it difficult to hear the voice of your soul. For example, when you’re tired, worried, anxious, stressed, overly busy, trying to do 8 things at once.
“Let us be silent, that we may hear the whispers of the gods.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
-
- Your soul’s voice is a loving, gentle, compassionate, warm voice. It’s not critical or mean. Ever.
- Hearing your soul’s voice is easier when you get quiet, be patient and open.
- Meditation helps you tune in to the voice of your soul. Take some meditative time – reflect, contemplate, mull, give the voice of your soul a chance to be heard.
- Want to know your life purpose, why you’re here, what your calling is? Your soul knows.
“Nowhere can man find a quieter or more untroubled retreat than in his own soul.” Marcus Aurelius,
-
- Your soul ALWAYS has something to say to you – you just need to learn to hear it.
- Hearing your soul isn’t a talent bestowed on a few lucky people – EVERYONE has a soul, and EVERYONE can hear theirs…if they’ll only listen.
- A cluttered mind makes it hard to hear your soul – do a ‘brain dump’ – write everything you are thinking – all the whiny, petty, silly, boring, stressy stuff cluttering up your mind. Once you’re done, you may find the voice of your soul coming through.
- What’s your most pressing concern right now? Get your soul’s input – the new perspective might be very enlightening!
- Your soul wants you to hear her, she wants to help you, she wants to share her wisdom…it’s your call to listen or not. Are you deciding to listen or not?
- Your soul see the beauty, the wonder, the awe, the spectacular nature of life – let that soul light shine through you.
- Your soul will help you fall in love with your life, hear your Big Dreams and make them come true. Why wouldn’t you check in with your soul every day???

Thanks Danielle. I would LOVE to contribute!
Ooh, walks around Paris…my soul is bouncing up and down at this idea!! xx
Thanks Joy! Lol – yes, I said to my Spiritual Team years ago “repeat it til I get it” Sometimes they repeat themselves 8 times in a row, just to beat me over the head with it!!! Be careful what you wish for, right?! Joking aside, my soul is saying “souls don’t mind repeating – our intention, our desire is that you get it…and we’re happy to say it again and again until you do get it, because we know how much easier and more joyful your lives will be when you get it”. xx
I love your blog, Donna. I am one who often connects a little later in the day as well due to getting up at 5 a.m. to go to my “regular” job so that I can do my “other” job in the afternoons and weekends. Sometimes I find that my soul has to repeat itself frequently so that I get the message. I love your suggestions!

Great article on listening to our soul Donna. I really like this. I am launching Happy Soul eSchool: education + relaxation at home for today’s busy moms + families. I would love to have you write a guest blog about listening to one’s soul for my blog. It goes out via a newsletter every week or so.
For me I listen to my soul when I go with the flow and live my life guided by my intuition. I listen to my soul when I meditate, paint, spend time relaxing with my son and when i am decide to go back to Europe to do some major leaning back and walks around Paris 🙂
Thank you for the great article!
