Well, the obvious answer to that question is that I sing and cheer along and don’t stop talking even though it is LOUD! Tuesday night Feeder were playing at the Academy in Birmingham…and they were pretty ordinary! I have seen them a few times before, and seen them BRILLIANT most of the time, so for them, this was a bit rubbish! The sound is never brilliant at the academy, but the guitars were too loud, Grant was too quiet and the sound was distorted – remind me why they do sound check again??
Anyway, halfway through the set the on-stage mixing desk blew up and they had to go off stage for a while, it turned out to be a good break because when they came back there was a noticeable difference – much better – this is when I actually started singing along, bouncing and getting into it…and then the mixing desk blew up again! This time the crowd were not accommodating and cheerful about it, especially when some bloke announced there would be no more music…
…3 minutes later the band came back on stage (honestly, why say ‘no more’ when there will be – luckily we didn’t believe him!). The crowd were now a bit antagonistic, aggressive and ready for some loud and fast music, which was delivered (after one slow melodic track with just 2 of them playing, presumably to make sure that they didn’t blow the desk up again!). With all the movement of the crowd, I found myself in between 2 really tall guys, both of whom were under the influence, and were jumping up and down for all they were worth!
I felt like I was in the middle of trees on acid!!! It was most bizarre. I had to move back a bit – where interestingly I could watch the taller guy jumping completely off beat and impossibly fast (I tried to copy the beat he was following…and no chance!). Anyway, it all made for a memorable evening – it’s certainly one I won’t forget in a hurry…and having had a couple of days to rest, my voice appears to be recovering nicely.
Which is good, because if there’s one thing I like more than live music, it’s talking!
Love
