Whose Idea Was Growing Up, Maturing, Getting Serious?

At what point did you stop being silly? At what age did you lose your sense of the ridiculous? When did the absurd, bizarre and comic become less important than your responsibilities and duties? When did you Grow Up, Mature, Get Serious? Can you pinpoint the age you were when you stopped laughing so much? If you’re lucky, you never did! You are still entertained by life, and you don’t take yourself too seriously. Good for you. But many of us are way too serious.

I like to think of myself as frivolous, daft, light-hearted and cheery. However, there are times when my endless to-do list, and my Big Dream for my life and my business make me lose perspective. (often when there’s technology involved!) It’s part of the reason I chose ‘Farting Around‘ as my August Daily Practice. To remind myself to Lighten Up! Because whose idea was it that as you got older, you have got to grow up, behave maturely and get serious? Seriously, what idiot came up with that one? I guarantee you that I will not meet my maker wishing I had taken myself more seriously, but I suspect I will wonder why I didn’t laugh more, be silly more, entertain myself more, dance more, fart around more, play more…

Kids know how to do this instinctively, before they become self-conscious. They know how to play and draw and bounce and run around and jump and giggle and be silly. We knew once too. And if we can find our inner silly, playful, fun, creative, laughing, joyful child, we can stick our tongue out to those who think adults should be sensible and serious and boring and just have some fun and enjoy life!

What are you going to do today to be silly or ridiculous or fun or fart around or daft or playful or frivolous or light-hearted (or all of the above!) Leave me a comment and let me know!

Love
